Work experience and not the degree that comes first to most Employer...

9.03.2010
Working as a Recruitment Consultant; we can easily see and define what are the differences between the fresh graduates (non working experiences) and those who graduates with work experiences.

Based on my own experiences, i would not hesitate to say that those who has experiences would find it alot more easier to find job or in their career moves, while, those who just graduated even with high degree still find it really hard to get a good job or to find their dream job. it's not because of their education or degree but it is because of the real experiences they are/aren't facing in working environment. and below is just a simple tips for a job seeker to pay attention on while applying your CV to any company or to recruitment agency.

What employers are looking for?

Relevant work experience
Good work ethic/attitude
Degree subject studied
Ability to be a team player
Mature attitude
Class of degree
Easygoing, cheerful attitude
Reputation of university attended
Ambitious and career-minded
Natural leadership

What turned the employers off:

Poor spelling, grammar in application
Obvious exaggerations
Poorly presented application
No relevant work experience
Non-targeted CV/covering letter
No covering letter with CV
Handwritten application/CV
No interests or extracurricular activities
Incorrect contact details for employer
Statements in CV not supported by examples

Thus, before you submit your resume to any company or to recruitment agency, plz be careful with the attention person, their names, their position (if known), their salutation (optional) or/and company name you are submit your CV to. because this is the very 1st step that will either lead u to get for the interview or to be disqualified.

How do we choose between Love and Career?

12.01.2009
The below article is originally posted by Cyndi, licensed psychotherapist, about how do we choose between love and work to ensure the less risks in losing any of the two.

If you feel that you are now staying in the middle and doubts of which we to go while both job and love just arrive at a very important stage, hope the below article could help give u some ideas and at least, i believe you would make a good decision.

In these increasingly stressful economic times the choice between love and career has become even more difficult than in the past. Statements such as, “I have no room in my life for a relationship,” or “I was so focused on climbing the ladder of success that I missed the relationship boat altogether,” or even worse, “My marriage ended because I was never home,“ are regular topics in many therapist’s offices. This very black and white thinking has forced people to one side or the other and they are finding it nearly impossible to strike a healthy balance.

It is true that today employers expect more from employees in terms of time and dedication. Professional careers that were once fulfilling adjuncts to a whole life now seem to suck people dry leaving them with little to give to a mate or a family. Family dinners, let alone date nights, have become a luxury reserved for those at a high enough level to make their own choices, those who are self-employed or those who are unemployed. Of course there are still jobs that have set hours and allow for a more balanced life but they are becoming less common. It seems to be an issue that is faced by many across all of the socio-economic spectrum.

So how do you manage this opposing pull? How do you continue to pursue your career goals while not losing sight of your interpersonal ones? In short, it is not easy. You do need to ask yourself some hard questions such as where you see yourself in 5 or 10 years, and how does the job you’re doing vs. the relationship you’re in play into that vision. Some people define themselves by the work that they do and in the absence of a mate, or desire for a mate, that is in fact their priority. This is a very personal choice and there is no one right answer. Certainly many people feel that their career is something they have some control over while meeting a mate and falling in love is left to chance. That statement should be examined carefully for its validity.

If you are in a relationship there are things you can do to make sure that you don’t actually have to make the choice between love and career. Make sure you are on the same page with your partner. If your job requires frequent travel–which can be extremely hard on relationships–carve out very specific times to be together when you are in the same place at the same time. Make a commitment to the time you do have together by focusing on each other. This means setting aside specific times that can be for answering emails, returning phone calls, or attending to work at home. The other times are time off from work periods that are for your partner and or your family. With technology work life has crept into home life like never before. Use your time at work as efficiently as possible so you can get home for that ever important family dinner at least 3 times per week. Take a close look at what your priorities are and try to honor those priorities by living your life accordingly. [healthy relations support group, 2009]

Why Recruitment Consultants Exist?

6.03.2009
According to Rich Wooten, Recruitment Consultant exists to fill the jobs of their client’s. What will normally happen is that recruitment consultant will call companies asking if they have any jobs that he/she can fill. They finally get one and then the set the wheels in motion to finding the candidate.

Normally they’ll advertise the job and search through their database. This is why you get calls out of the blue. Though, the recruitment consultant never gives any guarantees that you "candidate" will find a job or the company will find the employee.

Candidate condition

If you have ever looked for a job you will know, unless you work in a very specialized field, that it is very difficult to think of, say, 100 companies would be able to employ you.

Recruitment consultants do know this, good ones read newspapers, keep themselves up to date with what’s happening in their local area or specialist field.
If you are currently working, you will find out how time consuming finding a job is. Firstly you need to identify the companies you wish to target, and then you need to find the person you need to speak to.
Then the hard part, you need to speak to that person and find out if they are looking for someone like you, 9 times out of 10 the answer will be "no".

Speculative's CV

Posted speculative CVs are rarely filled for viewing later when they are there is usually no mechanism for a company to retrieve that CV. I.E. a database.

Once they have said "yes", then no doubt want you to sell yourself a little, most people feel a little nervous about this. Hence the recruitment consultant steps in, as it is easier for a third party to do the "selling".

The reason companies use them is purely for convenience since they charge anything between 15% to 20%; so they are expensive but as any employer knows placing a job in the paper is a costly affair.

Not simply the actual cost of the advert but managing the response, writing the ad copy and spending time getting the advert just right to portray the company in the best light etc. It is far easier to give the job to an agency and then look at 3 or 4 CVs rather than 100-200 inappropriate ones.

So until Job-seekers have either the time or the confidence to get jobs for themselves and until employers stop using Recruitment Consultants for convenience, the Recruitment Consultant is here to stay.
